WIPO representatives demonstrate distaste for transparency, public debate in CDIP

William New posted his take on the first meeting of the CDIP at WIPO to the IP Watch blog.
The short version (as several observers and participants have already noted) is that nothing much happened.
The really interesting part of the article comes towards the end when New addresses the ongoing struggle to keep WIPO negotiations public and accessible to the NGO’s with consultancy status.
Turns out the WIPO representatives and administrators would prefer to keep real discussion behind closed doors in so-called “informal” sessions. I guess old habits die hard for trade representatives and technocrats…
